Dracula – Bram Stoker

draculaI read Dracula slowly over the month of October, originally as the Infinite Summer group read for Hallowe’en. Except that it didn’t work out quite like that.

The concept of Dracula is one with which very few people can be unfamiliar, and it is hard not to come to the book without a great many preconceptions. Both the pop culture it has spawned, and the off-hand lit crit which is bandied around on the subject (I have always thought that it was about syphilis.) However, ultimately, my own preconceptions were the major sticking point.

Banned Books Week – Round-up

A dismal showing for my first Banned Books Week, and for my reading in general.   Next week should be more productive, and I shall endeavour to be better prepared for next year’s Banned Books.  I hope.

I did manage to read loraxDr Seuss’ The Lorax to my youngest daughter. I have to admit, it is not a story which I enjoy reading; the subject matter is depressing.  But that is rather the point.  If reading a book about environmental disaster to your own children doesn’t influence attitudes, then what will? The Lorax has been banned (no dates were supplied) in some schools and libraries for ‘political content’ and a more specific challenge was on the grounds that it ‘criminalizes the forestry industry.’ Continue reading
