The Lottery – Shirley Jackson

Shirley_Jackson_The_LotteryOften the lure of the labyrinthine internet leads down increasingly obscure and pointless avenues, but on this occasion my rodent-like questing came to an unexpected, abrupt and satisfactory halt at Classic Short Stories, a website for… well, it’s all in the name. A little sniffing around revealed a short story by Shirley Jackson, one of many authors at whom I feared I would never arrive.  There are a few typographical issues with the reproduction, but not to an intolerable extent.

It is a short story, and anything I say about it will tend towards spoilerage… I will say that again, just to be sure.

I have to admit to a wariness wrt biographies, auto or otherwise. To date the few autobiographies which I have ventured to read were ghost-written and, not to put too fine a point on it, uniformly dire. Continue reading
